FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 21, 2011

Guam’s public school students will have more than just new bus stops this school year.

Dozens of volunteers participated in Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio’s ‘Guam Seal Bus Stop Project’ on August 20, where they adorned the bus stops with fresh coats of paint depicting the Great Seal of Guam.

The bus stops, which were built by the Department of Public Works, will be placed at locations throughout the island where there are currently none.

“Thank you to all the volunteers and corporate sponsors who helped make this project a success,” said Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio. “I hope that when our students are waiting for their bus to pick them up for school, they look at the work that we’ve done and they are proud of our island.”

Volunteers were made up of representatives from the Offices of the Governor and Lt. Governor, Guam Cub Scouts, The Works! Foundation, Marine Forces Pacific Forward, Pacific Surface Masters, Guam Ancestral Lands Commission, Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense, Port Authority Police, Department of Corrections, Guam Waterworks Authority and numerous youth and adult residents.

Isla Paint and Roofing Supply and Sherwin Williams donated the many gallons of paint that were used on the interior and exterior walls of the bus stops. Pay-Less Supermarkets and Guam Fast Food (Kentucky Fried Chicken) provided meals and water for all of the volunteers.

Saturday’s event marked the second in a series of projects that Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio has planned to enhance the appearance of bus stops around the island. No government funds were used for the project.

If you wish to assist in future events, contact Roe-Ann Cruz, Guam Seal Bus Stop Project manager, at 475-9380-4, or through e-mail: roeann.cruz@guam.gov.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 26, 2011

Lieutenant Governor Ray Tenorio launched the Guam Seal Bus Stop Project Saturday, July 23, 2011. The first bus stop to be adorned with the seal is in Tamuning along Route 1, next to the Hafa Adai Motel.

“We are excited to finally begin this project. We want these bus stops to be clean for the thousands of students that use them every day,” Guam Seal Project Coordinator Roe-Ann Cruz said.

The Great Seal of Guam depicts a scene of a lone coconut tree at the mouth of the Hagåtña River with a flying proa nearby, and Two Lover’s Point on the horizon. It is enclosed by an oval pointed on either end symbolizing a sling stone.

Tenorio added that, “the Great Seal of Guam is a representation of our island and our people. It is my hope to reinvigorate a sense of pride in our island culture through projects like this.”

Volunteers from the Governor and Lieutenant Governor’s Office partnered with the Islandwide Beautification Task Force, Isla Paint & Roofing Supply, McDonald’s, Winchell’s, and the Tamuning-Tumon-Harmon Mayor’s Office for this first bus stop.

For more information please contact Roe-Ann Cruz at 475-9380 or send an email to roeann.cruz@guam.gov.
