Governor Eddie Calvo and I have a mission to ensure we protect, preserve and perpetuate Guam’s unique culture, heritage and language. As Chairperson of the Islandwide Beautification Task Force, I want to go beyond just picking up trash around the island. Through the Task Force, I want to work together with the people of Guam to find innovative ways to beautify and promote the island. While there are many different projects under the Task Force, I am excited to reveal three pilot programs: Blueprint for Service, Blueprint for Leadership and Blueprint for Partnership.
Blueprint for Service
Blueprint for Service is an excellent way to get high school seniors involved with community service. There are three components to this project. First, participating classes must clean and maintain their school’s campus. Second, they must reach out to the community and adopt an area to do the same. Third, they must come up with a video documentary to showcase their progress, testimonials and end results.
Task force board members will be inspecting the areas to determine the winner near the end of the school year. Grand prize winners will be awarded an all-expense paid graduation banquet complete with prizes and entertainment. Blueprint for Service would be a great opportunity for students to exhibit their school spirit and network themselves with our many sponsors.
Blueprint for Leadership
Since the concept of the IBTF is, “It Starts With Us,” the Blueprint for Leadership is a project that will incorporate our Government of Guam agencies to set the standard for cleanliness. GovGuam should lead by example what it means to keep our island clean by starting with our work spaces. I will be holding each GovGuam agency director responsible for their building. I encourage all GovGuam employee to take ownership in the places they work and encourage them to find creative ways to revitalize their buildings.
Blueprint for Partnership
Blueprint for Partnership involves nonprofit organizations, non-government entities, and private companies to come up with resourceful or enterprising ways to revitalize a designated area in the community. For example, an organization can adopt a highway, park or beach. They are responsible for maintaining the area’s cleanliness and should find ways to attract residents and visitors to that area. This could be an effort to promote Guam’s overlooked sites or areas by instilling a sense of pride and appreciation in them.
